Helga Slater

Helga currently works as a Direct Support Staff in our 24-Waiver department and has worked at The Arc Southwest Indiana for eight years.

What’s your role at The Arc Southwest Indiana?

I work at a direct support staff. We help the consumers with daily living tasks. We also teach and encourage them to set and obtain their goals.

What brought you to The Arc Southwest Indiana?

I was new in town and looking for a job. My son-in-law suggested I would be good working for The Arc and I’ve been here since then.

What do you like most about your job?

The favorite part of my job is being able to be a positive person in the lives of the people I serve. Observing and getting to know the consumers is such a privilege.

Who’s your role model?

My mother has always been my role model. She taught me to care about people and be polite. Her favorite advice to me was, “Your mouth can be a blessing or it can be a curse”.

What’s one thing not many people know about you?

I’m a writer.

What have you gained from working at The Arc Southwest Indiana?

I have gained a better understanding of people that have different life paths than me. Everyone has a story, you just have to listen.

What are 3 words you’d use to describe The Arc Southwest Indiana?

Advocate – Loyalty – Acceptance

What’s your favorite memory from The Arc Southwest Indiana?

I always enjoy going to the Thanksgiving dinner and dance with the consumers that the K of C and Elks host.

Any advice for current / new staff?

This is a great place to work, but more important, you must be loyal and dedicated to this line of work. You have to have respect, understanding and love what you do.
