Employee Q & A

What brought you to The Arc Southwest Indiana?

I was looking for work that would give me a feeling of fulfillment in my life. Before I moved to the USA I was a nurse, a job that gave me lots of fulfillment. In the USA it was very hard to find a similar job, because my Dutch diplomas were not accepted by most health care facilities, so I ended up working in retail. In the meantime I kept looking for positions in health care. My friend told me one day about The Arc. I looked on the website and read an interview with a DSP. She said that working as a DSP gave her the fulfillment in life she was looking for. That made me apply.

What do you like most about your job?

The best thing in the world is when you see your consumers smile and laugh as a result of the support you give. I can’t explain very well, but it’s the best feeling in the world to see the consumer happy and satisfied.

 Who’s your role model?

My role model as a DSP is my colleague Candie Randall. She trained me and showed me how she puts so much love and care in her job that being a DSP doesn’t feel like a job. The way of interaction between her and the consumers taught me so much that I see her as my role model.

What’s one thing not many people know about you?

Most people don’t know I was born and raised in The Netherlands where I worked as a nurse for 6 years in a rehabilitation facility for stroke patients. I speak four languages and understand at least two more.

All because of the love and appreciation from the consumers I support.
